The light in this image looks to be natural light coming from above the subject and looks to be coming through a small gap making lines of zig zagging light. The whole image is quite bleached out and over exposed making all the light in the image soft. The majority of the background is made up f what looks to be like curtain material rolled up which gives quite a soft texture to the image which is contrasted with the more harsh cracked walls and door frame. The curtain also has lots of creases and lines running down it which is again contrasted by the zig zag running horizontally along the curtain, the top zig zag is thinner and broken due to the contours of the curtain. The natural light zig zagging is replicated by the woman's arm which adds to the sense of naturalness in the image. The bottom right corner of this image is the darkest and most defined part and its almost as if all the light from the rest of the image draws down into this part. The photo looks to have been taken slightly above the focus at around eye level as the image looks to be at a downward tilt. The fact there is no sharp focus in this image adds to the softness of it . The photo is framed at a slight angle which might be to adapt the angle of the zig zags. The photographer cut out the rest of the woman's body so only her arm is in the shot which might be to help show her arm is replicating the zig zag as if you could see the rest of her body it might be less obvious what the arm is trying to do. The aren't any colours in this image as its taken in black and white how ever there are lots of different tones in this image from the lightest parts in the lines of light where as the bottom right corner is the darkest part of the image.
Vivian Maier
The lighting in this image is all natural however even though its black and white you can tell its not a bright day as there is no flare on the lens and no light reflecting of the mirror or windows. There are lots of textures in this image first of all the texture from the mans clothing which is contrasted with the smoothness of the mirror he's carrying. Making up the background there is a variety of textures with the brick walls from the building behind as well as the pile of material and scrap wood and metal. All of this is quite rough textured apart from the mirror which makes it stand out so much. This image is cluttered everywhere you look theres things to look at which matches the context of the image as the man in it is throwing out rubbish and clutter. At first look it appears to be the woman in the mirror taking the photo however I think the image looks to have been taken at a high position than where the woman's standing as she is holding the camera at her hip. The framing of this image packs as many lines in as possible as it chops the pile of rubbish in half to fit in the corner of the building and window frames going down the building. The photo is taken in black and white I think this works as there is so many different objects in this image that if i was in colour the colours might distract might distract from other aspects of the image.
Photos in response to the visual elements
These photos are in response to lines and light and were taken on a iPod touch in school. Having to take photos to a strict theme was difficult as its hard not to take photos of whatever you like however having a strict theme to work to makes it a lot easier when it comes to sifting through the images and picking which ones to upload. All of these images were taken to fit the visual elements lines and light. However they could be a lot better as they all of a lot of space in them which doesn't match either theme. If i retake these images I will try to frame them better so that every part of the image fits my two themes.
Second attempt at photos
For my second attempt at taking photos of lines and light I tried to frame every image so every aspect of the photo matched my theme and there wasn't any part where it didn't relate to lines or light. I think that this set of images were more successful than the first as theres no dead space in the image its all got a purpose and was intentionally included in the image. This is due to the fact I took more time looking for the right image and framing it in my head so when it came to taking the photo I already had a plan of how to take it, rather than just walking around taking photos of everything without a second thought. Out of all of these images my favourite is the bottom left I like it because I think its the best framed and simple as it is makes it obvious what the focus of the image is. The corner bending round the light on the floor almost frames it and the metal bars seem to guide your attention straight into the light. The contrast between the two different floor levels is interesting the bottom floors made white by the amount of light on it contrasted with the darker more shaded orange colour. The way the image is taken gives it a flat effect the bottom and top floor not having a sense of height. It could be better if it had the same amount of beams on each side of the corner as it would add to the neatness of the photo.
Photos without a camera
The light in the image is all natural and comes from the windows straight a head as well as from above coming down from the ceiling. The light is quite harsh and has bleached out the floor directly in front of the window but it fades and gets softer revealing the floors darker orange colour as it gets further from the window. The main texture in this image is probably the smooth shininess of the floor however the walls and lockers have a slightly rougher texture so the light reflects off them slightly differently. As well as that theres is texture from the ceiling where theres thousands of wholes in it creating a rougher texture different to the sheen on the floor. The image involves lots of lines in it from the lockers on one side to the metal beams on the other . Theres also a large amount of squares in the image from the locker and the window frame at the end frames the outside in to its own picture of the trees and buildings creating another square in the image.
light and line
I think these are the best images I have taken fitting the theme of lines and light.
Evaluating Busras photo without a camera
I took this image from after reading Busras evaluation of a photo without a camera. There are two sources of light in this image there is natural light coming from the doors down the corridor, theres also quite harsh artificial light coming from the lamp on the side of the wall the light from the lamp is illuminating part of the stairs and the natural light has given the floor at the bottom of the image a glossy effect. The amount of light in this photo has given everything a sheen so there isn't much variation of textures in the image everything looks smooth. The whole of the image is in focus however due to the quality of the camera on my phone nothing is in very sharp focus. This image was taken at around chest height at a downwards angle the image looks as though its from the pov of the photographer and how the perspective makes the stair case look much smaller at the bottom exaggerates how tall the stairs are. The way the photo is framed guides your eye down the stairs as everything seems to be directed to that part of the image the handrails especially seem to show you where to look. Even though in the top right and left of the image there is extra detail that could distract you from the central focus it doesn't you don't really pay attention to it when you first look at the image. There is a colour scheme in this image of black, orange and white. The vibrancy of the orange is contrasted by the worn slightly washed out black and white on the handrail and walls. My image turned out to be very close to the original image that Busra had imagined apart from the feet at the bottom of the stairs that is the only difference.
The light in all of these images is natural due to the fact they are all taken outside during the daytime with clear skies. Trees and nature seem to be a main focus of a lot of these images as well as disguise with trees often being used to hide peoples faces or bodies. Theres varying textures in these images a rougher harshness from the bark of the trees contrasted with a softness from the grass and blue skies. The main colours in these images also have a natural feel with the images dominated by blue from the clear skies and green from the grass at the top and bottom of the images, however some images are busier than others with the school building taking up most of the background however the dominating colour of the building being a sandy yellow even that fits in with the natural theme. Due to the inclusion of trees and lamp posts straight vertical lines going through the image lines are also a common theme through out most of the images .
